Hello friends. Well we made it to the top. This is the last of our 4 part walk along a trail that has a great railroad history.
We have been walking the former Lehigh and New England, Palmerton branch. This broke off the LNE mainline at the Lehigh Gap bridge and worked its way down the mountain side and into the eastern Zinc facilities in Palmerton PA. This spur was put into service in April of 1914. This spur provided an interchange point with the Chestnut Ridge Railway. The CRR ran from Palmerton to Kunkletown PA. The LNE and CRR swapped raw materials and finished goods for local industries including sand quarried in Little Gap PA that was destined for Bethlehem Steel.
The LNE was abandoned in 1961 and what wasn’t taken over by other railroads was quickly removed. Thank you all for taking the time to follow along on this hike. I really enjoyed being able to share these views with you. Also thank you to everyone who supplied me with the great information I was looking for about this spur. I couldn’t do this without you good people. Thank you for watching. 5/17/25
