Magical Kids Doropie (NES) Playthrough [English] - NintendoComplete

I recorded this video awhile back, about the same time as I recorded the American version. I was going to hold off on uploading it - I didn't want to be too repetitive with my content - but many more people than I expected expressed interest in the Japanese game, so here it is!

Though the two versions feature nearly identical gameplay, they feel almost like different games: with the exception of the intro sequence, Vic Tokai's localization team stripped the game of anything that required an English translation, axing every single between-stage cutscene and the game's ending. The title screen and stage bumpers were hugely simplified, with full-screen illustrations being turned into flat black screens with text overlays, and the stage-ending hexagram was removed, though that was to be expected given NoA's stance on religious iconography at the time.

Whatever the reasons were for the alterations, the cuts to The Krion Conquest seem like such short-sighted, budget-driven corner-cutting measures. By removing so much of the story and of the art, they hacked out most of the game's personality, charm, and immediate appeal.

The cutscenes do a nice job of linking the stages together and explaining your character's motivations with their "Ninja Gaiden cinematics done on a shoestring-budget" feel, and the game feels like a far more complete experience with their inclusion.

While I enjoyed The Krion Conquest, there's no question that Magical Kids Doropie provides a more satisfying experience, and for those that found The Krion Conquest to be too difficult, the Japanese version allows you to continue after a game over, considerably easing the game's potential for frustration.
