'I Know There's An Answer' feature lead vocal turns by Mike Love, Brian Wilson, and Al Jardine. It's a song of worldly observation and aspiration, uncharacteristic of the Beach Boys' more common subject matter. Considering the time period of it's creation, the song may have been influenced by the folky protest singers of the early 60s like Bob Dylan. It even prominently features a bass harmonica, the harmonica being an instrument so often used by Dylan on his own records. It's certainly a unique Beach Boys record no matter it's intent.
The song was written by Brian Wilson and Terry Sachen who was the Beach Boys road manager and sometime Wilson drug supplier. Wilson was inspired to write the song following his experience with the drug LSD (quite legal at the time) having had what he called a "religious experience" on the occasion that he used it. Originally they titled their song 'Hang On To Your Ego', but Mike Love was concerned about the song's reference to drugs. Drugs did not fit his idea of what the Beach Boys public image was and should be. It was decided for Love to write a few new lyrics including a new chorus, thereby changing the song's meaning and it's title to 'I Know There's An Answer'.
