By late 1942, the North African campaign had reached a breaking point. The Afrika Korps, under the legendary Erwin Rommel, stood at the gates of Egypt, threatening the Suez Canal and the entire Allied position in the Middle East. But at El Alamein, the Allied Eighth Army under Bernard Montgomery prepared a massive, meticulously planned counterblow.
On October 23, the desert lit up with thousands of guns firing in unison as Operation Lightfoot began. Allied infantry advanced through minefields so dense they were called the “Devil’s Gardens,” while tanks smashed into German and Italian positions. After days of brutal fighting, Montgomery unleashed Operation Supercharge, the final armored thrust that shattered the Axis line.
Low on fuel, outnumbered, and overwhelmed, the Afrika Korps began a desperate retreat. Churchill would later declare:
“Before Alamein we never had a victory. After Alamein we never had a defeat.”
The Second Battle of El Alamein wasn’t just a battle — it was the turning point that saved Egypt, secured the Mediterranean, and marked the beginning of the end for Axis forces in Africa.
