Flying to the Walt Ray A-12 Memorial: A Backcountry Helicopter Adventure

Описание: On a windy afternoon in January 1967, CIA pilot Walter L. Ray perished in an accident while test flying the top secret Lockeed A-12 spy plane out of Groom Lake. Just before Memorial Day 2017, two pilots looking to experience history and pay their respects to a fallen hero set out by helicopter from Las Vegas on a mission to find Walt's memorial on a remote mountain in eastern Nevada at the spot where he gave his life for his country. This was the first known landing on the improvised "LZ Law Code" near Garden Mt. since the government's search and recovery operation of that name more than 50 years ago!

Lars and I undertook a lot of planning for this flight. We weren't sure we'd found it on Google Earth, but decided to go anyway. The Air Force made this LZ by clearing off the saddle with manual labor and some explosives. You can still see where some of the trees were taken down with C4 charges placed near the ground. This was the landing site for the UH-1 that came in to retrieve Walt's body and from here it was flown initially to Nellis. It took the searchers a couple of days to find him. Fortunately, his parachute came partly out of the pack when the seat hit the mountain, and it was easy to spot from the air because they used rescue color canopies for training flights. We did have quite an adventure on this beautiful day, but this is one of the saddest aviation stories I've ever come across. We salute you Walt Ray, Jack Weeks, and all of the other Cygnus pilots who pushed it to the edge and put it all on the line for national defense. We owe you a debt that can never be repaid.
