Hi guys, I’m a regular on Selby canal, fished it for over 30yrs for various species. When it comes to the pike (well what’s left of them after the scores of law ignoring Eastern European anglers are the majority) I always found a lure approach better, travel light too and you can hop from peg to peg. The canal gets very weedy in the warmer months and almost becomes unfishable for a while. Happy to share any tips and pointers with anyone wanting to have a go, coarse fishing is my preferred genre and have had bags of fish up to 20+lb from this stretch and the YDAA stretch.
From the white swing bridge near Selby fire station to the humpback bridge near brayton (the bridge in the video) is patrolled by York and district amalgamation of anglers, membership is £42 for the year or £3 per day and available from field sports on new street in Selby (near the toll bridge) the stretch you were fishing (from the humpback bridge to the anchor bridge) is patrolled by mosella Selby and is membership only and is available from selby angling centre in brook street (follow signs from the centre of Selby for Doncaster) and Costa Just £15 for the year I believe. From the anchor bridge up to west haddlesey where the Canal joins the river aire was patrolled by goole AC, however I believe they let this stretch go and is currently available to lease but I aren’t entirely sure on that one. The canal does hold a good number of double figure Carp and I have personally seen a few come out with the biggest being 22lb, the 3 I have seen captured all came from the YDAA stretch opposite the fire station.
Tickets for either stretch aren’t available on the bank either and should be purchased in advance, hoping to get something in place with the YDAA bailiff to change that though as I feel it deters anglers from turning up knowing they have to travel to Selby a day in advance to buy tickets then travel again to fish.
