How Can You Mend A Broken Heart🎤the Bee Gees🎤covered by Al Green🎤Easy Guitar Lesson Tutorial

Today I bring you this truly beautiful song by the Bee Gees. A song I was kind of familiar with as a kid growing up in the 70’s but I truly fell in love with it when I heard it featured in the opening scene to Denzel Washington's movie “The Book of Ely”

That version was sung by legendary singer Al Green, and was such a soulful, emotional version it had me at hello.

Well today I’m gonna show you how to play this the easy-ish version way, with mostly open chords and only a couple of of barre chords.

Released in 1971, it was notably the first ever #1 hit for the Bee Gees in the US, staying there for 4 weeks. The song was written by Barry and Robyn following a short musical hiatus of the band. The song is representative of a kind of peace offering amongst the brothers, which we are so fortunate for as they went on to a massive catalog hits throughout the 70’s and 80’s.

The song was a huge success, also reaching #1 in Canada and Malaysia and #2 here in Australia.

Like all great songs, it has been covered by a host of big name stars including Johnny Mathis, Rod Stewart, Sheryl Crow, Cher, Michael Buble, Joss Stone and Florence Henderson…

That’s’ right. Florence Henderson from the Brady Bunch. She covered this song in a medley in an episode of the Brady Bunch Hour back in 1977

All great versions of the song, but in my opinion the best cover was Al Greens version released in 1972.

The brothers recall the song came so easy to them, writing it in about 1 hour on a lazy Sunday afternoon. A gift only a select few can claim to have.

In total the Bee Gees wrote over 1,000 songs with 20 of those becoming number 1 hits.

My favourite line in the song is “I could never see tomorrow. I was never told about the sorrow" which aptly describes the impending heartache that is about to be experienced by the lead character in the song.

And one burning question continues to rage about the Bee Gees. Are they English or Australian. The truth is, they were born in the UK but they spent most of their formative years growing up in Australia, so both countries can claim them as their own.

As a campfire guitar song it is a beauty. Soulful, melodic and just a beautiful song to sing.
