If your horse nips, it likely that the horse is just trying to communicate to you that other efforts of communication on his/her part have been missed or misunderstood. Or, is it possible that the subtle signs were recognized and that some sort of miscommunication has occurred without resolution etc. from the horses viewpoint? Sometimes this type of behavior is accidentally reinforced. For example, someone may feed when they think the horse is about to nip as an attempt to redirect. Other people play with a horse's face in a way that encourages them to nip, without realizing it.
A great way to begin addressing nipping behaviors is by videoing the interaction between the human and the horse and carefully analyzing what signs lead up to the nippy behavior and what the human is doing beforehand. With this information, one can better read the horse's emotions and the associated behaviors. Then, address both of these by training safely in protected contact.
In all training and especially in circumstances where horses may nip, two way communication and positively rewarding the behavior that we want to see more of, such as the horse standing with it's head straight and soft, is the key!
