The Fish River Canyon is the second largest canyon in the World after the Grand Canyon of the USA, and the second most visited tourist attraction in Namibia. It is also is the longest interior river in Namibia and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Fish River Canyon features a gigantic ravine, in total about 160 km long, up to 27 km wide and in places almost 550 m deep. The canyon consists of an upper canyon, where river erosion was inhibited by hard gneiss bedrocks, and a lower canyon formed after erosion had finally worn through the solid metamorphic rocks. Both parts have been declared a national monument in 1962.
The Giants Playground is a unique geological formation known for its large, randomly stacked dolerite boulders, believed to have been formed around 180-160 million years ago. The significance of the Giants Playground lies in its geological uniqueness and the striking visual impact of the landscape. Visitors are drawn to the site to marvel at the fascinating rock formations and explore the area.
The Quiver Tree Forest comprises about 250 specimens of the Aloe dichotoma, called the quiver tree because the San people used its branches to make quivers. The tallest trees are two to three centuries old. The forest holds tremendous ecological value, as a huge variety of insects, birds, and mammals are drawn to the abundant nectar. The forest was declared a national monument of Namibia in 1995.
