Step 23 of my 1996 Honda Accord timing belt and water pump replacement series. In this video, I reinstall the cylinder head cover and go through the gasket preparation and installation process in detail.
When I originally removed the cylinder head cover, the gasket was partially stuck in place. I first tried leaving it on the head and lowering the cover over it, but it was very difficult to align the gasket properly with the groove in the cover. I ended up carefully prying the gasket out using a plastic trim tool.
Before reinstalling, I gently cleaned as much of the leftover liquid gasket from the cylinder head as possible. When inserting the gasket into the cylinder head cover, it is important to orient it correctly so the tabs face the side with the camshaft pulley and the oil filler hole.
Once the gasket is fully seated in the cover, I apply small dabs of liquid gasket to the four corners around the semi-circular sections of the gasket. I then hold the cover by those rounded areas and carefully lower it onto the head, making sure not to disturb or wipe off the liquid gasket.
The easiest way to align everything is to line up the ignition wire holes in the cover with the spark plug tube openings in the head. The breather hose can get in the way during installation, so rotating it out of the way beforehand helps. The same applies to the alternator wiring harness on the front/right side of the engine.
The liquid gasket I used recommends hand-tightening the bolts first and waiting about one hour before final torque. After waiting, I tightened the fasteners to 7.2 lb-ft in the following sequence: rear-center, front-right, front-left, rear-right, and rear-left.
This is part of a slow, detailed DIY series where each step is recorded individually so anyone can follow along at their own pace. In the next video, I continue with the remaining reassembly steps.
This is not meant to replace a factory service manual. Always follow proper safety procedures and verify specs for your specific vehicle.
