Hello and welcome back to Namibia
"As we bid a fond farewell to the enchanting Mirabib, our journey takes us west.
This time we aim for the Homeb campsite in the Kuiseb Canyon. Somewhat lesser known, more remote and off the beaten path.
Here we spend another night under the stars.
The Kuiseb Canyon is a place of magic that beckons us with its massive red dunes rising from the river bed. It is here that The Kuiseb River forms a the dramatic end for the ever encroaching dunes from the south. This invisible boundary has a silver lining and forms a natural oasis for all the desert creatures of the Namib.
On the northern banks the crusty mountains act as the watershed for the occasional rain and fog and in turn The Anna trees tap deep into the ground to access the water forming a green ribbon to sustain life in this remarkable setting.
We set up camp, settle in and get busy in the field kitchen and as the golden hour approaches and the shadows get longer, the canyon delivers a mindblowing visual spectacle. Enjoy the montage!
We spent two nights in glorious Swakopmund had our oysters, enjoyed endless showers, reminded our loved ones that we are still alive Downloaded footage and provisioned.
We are now locked and loaded for our next leg north to the Kunene
We stop in Henties Bay for the final refuel. Our destination is the center of Messum crater
And so, we find ourselves at home in this wilderness, a fleeting moment in the grand tapestry of existence. As the stars keep watch and the night enfolds us in its embrace, we are reminded of the privilege of witnessing the Kuiseb Canyon's beauty, and of finding a profound sense of belonging beneath the infinite expanse of the cosmos."
"Amidst the arid and seemingly inhospitable landscapes of the Namib Desert, a botanical wonder stands as a testament to the resilience and adaptability of life. Allow me to introduce you to Welwitschia mirabilis, a living relic that defies time and challenges our understanding of what it means to thrive in extreme environments.
We veer off the road east- into the Messum river and encounter a cavalry of horse heads guarding the entrance to the caldera.
Welcome to the road to Mars and the enigmatic realm of the Messum Crater, a place that echoes with the whispers of time and the resilience of life. This crater, once a haven for the Damara people, is a testament to both the unforgiving beauty and the indomitable spirit that characterize this martian-like landscape.
As we venture into the heart of the caldera, we are transported to a world that seems to exist beyond our realm. The landscape stretches out like a canvas from another world.
The approximately 135 million year old Messum Crater, reveals its history in every contour and every stone.
It was here that the pastoral Damara people once sought refuge, embracing the harshness of the environment as a way of life. The remnants of their existence remain etched into the very fabric of the crater—a testament to their resilience and resourcefulness
Welwitschia's remarkable adaptations are a symphony of survival. Its unique leaf structure allows it to capture and funnel moisture from the coastal fog that rolls in from the Atlantic Ocean, providing a crucial source of sustenance in the otherwise water-starved environment. This intricate dance with the elements, combined with a deep taproot that seeks out hidden water reserves, enables Welwitschia to thrive where few other forms of life dare to exist.
Survival in this martian-like landscape of intrusive and extrusive rocks is no small feat. The conditions are harsh, the elements unforgiving. Life, in its most tenacious forms, clings to the crevices, adapting to the extremes. Here, every droplet of water, every sheltered nook, becomes a sanctuary, a precious resource to be cherished.
.
…And so, the Messum Crater stands as a living testament to the boundless forces that have shaped our world—the relentless passage of time, the interplay of life and nature, It is a reminder that in the heart of the martian-like landscape, there is a story waiting to be told, a story of survival, of transformation, and of the enduring connection between humanity and the Earth."
