What if... Sia made a Power Metal epic? Imagine, if you will, an alternative universe, not unlike our own. Australian singer-songwriter, Sia travels to Japan to perform at a festival. Unfortunately, her band are travelling separately from her, and their flight is cancelled, leaving our heroine without accompaniment. It looks as though she will not be able to perform, until, at the eleventh hour, she is approached by member of Japanese power-metal phenomenon, Lovebites, who are also on the bill. Unexpectedly, it turns out that they are massive Sia fans, and wish to offer their services as stand-in accompanists. A hasty backstage rehearsal is convened, and by showtime, Sia and the band are able to perform an impressive (if shortened) set for the grateful audience, climaxing with an epic power metal-infused arrangement of 'Chandelier'. Sia enjoys the experience so much that, on returning home, she enters the studio and re-records the track, complete with pummelling double kick drums and soaring harmony lead guitars, a move which invites considerable interest from metal audiences worldwide!
Written by Furler/Shatkin. I do not own the rights to the song, Sia's spectacular vocal, or any of the clips/images used. Backing track arranged, performed and produced by me, using GarageBand and whatever instruments I had to hand.

Having synced the lead vocal to the grid, I first programmed the drums, taking the song from a mournful ballad feel in the verses to full-on thrash tempo in the chorus. I added bass, trying to keep it simple and tightly-locked with the kick drum, then I worked on guitars. There are seven guitar tracks in total - two distorted rhythms, a clean chorused sound from the verses, three harmony leads and a separate solo lead. I know they're not very authentically power metal - I originally planned a more elaborate arrangement, but it got in the way of the vocal, plus I'm not really great at the kind of elaborate neo-classical shred I really required. Still, I think what I did play works pretty well with the song. I also wanted some orchestral touches to make it sound a bit more epic and grandiose, so there are some strings and a French horn on there too, although not very prominent in the mix.
