My reimagining of the 3rd century Greek hymn which was found on a papyrus fragment at the archaeological site of Oxyrhynchus, Egypt. I've written it in an early Greek style of lettering in boustrophedon ("as the ox plows" that is, left to right and right to left on alternating lines) with ink and some gathered sticks. I performed the music from the original papyrus (vocals, piano, melodica, tin whistle, backpacker guitar) and digitally layered my recordings like a palimpsest.
I based my text (below) on several translations and made some alterations and additions to fit the melody.
Let the world be silent. Let not the stars shine their lights, let not the stars shine their lights.
Calm the winds, silence the rivers. Let all praise Father and Son and Holy Spirit.
Together let us listen for the voice—in the noise—fill our ears with the sound of silence.
Let all sing together Amen. Amen. Amen. Bring empire low, and hope to our hearts.
All glory to God, the giver of all good things. Amen and Amen.
