As an avid traveler, we have had our share of good, great and what on earth experiences. Our recent stay at Grand Seas by @ExploriaResorts was a blend of good and bad. Lessons were learned, read the full review to see what to look for before booking a hotel.
We wanted to stay at a place with a full kitchen or kitchenette as we were going to be there for about a week. The hotel or advertised as 'resort' in this case looked nice in pictures. At first glance, it was neat, spacious, on the beach, had a tiki bar, and a cafe.
What we didn't anticipate was- they are primarily a time share property, and right when we checked in were handed off to the 'concierge' who instead of showing us our room or giving us a rundown of the property started selling us time share appointment, was extremely persistent and borderline rude. Later that evening I found out, there was not going to be any housekeeping so if we needed towels, or other amenities including toilet paper we would have to get them from front desk. We wanted to check out of the hotel right away, were told there would be a penalty. Contacted @Expedia and the turn around time for resolution was 72 hours- our stay was for 5 nights, defeated the purpose of finding a resolution.
I made breakfast a couple of mornings and when realized there would be no trash pick up, had to abandon cooking meals and saving money. At least they had extra trash bags, a broom and dustpan in the suite. For fresh towels, we had to take the used ones to the laundry room facility, on the far side of the 'resort' and they counted them before handing us new ones. We just kept the trash outside our room, there was no way I was going to take it wherever they wanted us to.
The reason the experience was frustrating, we didn't sign up for a vacation rental. It was false marketing and promotion, the property is listed as a 'resort' and didn't provide any resort benefits or amenities. They have an everyday resort fee, asked for a deposit, and other additional fees.
Lessons learned:
Check before booking if property is an actual hotel or time share.
Be careful while booking in states with Time share properties.
Make sure the property has daily housekeeping.
Email or message hotel before to ensure they provide the amenities you specifically need.
