Here is some footage I took of the 3 active level crossings on the Maldon – Castlemaine Heritage Railway (Victorian Goldfields Railway), in January 2017. The crossings are Rowe St, Maclise St and Johnson St/Pyrenees Hwy. I didn’t film any passive level crossings with ‘give way’ signs. Each level crossing has a unique set of infrastructure.
Rowe St has:
A Safetran type 3 E-bell, which recently replaced a Westinghouse Hybrid bell. I assume the hybrid bell broke down or was stolen
Westinghouse lights and cross-arms
Maclise St has:
A McKenzie & Holland teardrop bell, which is an older cast-iron model (thanks McK & H Aust for that info). This bell has definitely seen better days
McKenzie & Holland lights and cross-arms
Johnson St/Pyrenees Hwy has:
A Western Cullen Hayes mechanical bell
Harmon lights with Henkes cross-arms
The Goldfields railway has a policy of running diesel trains during the summer period, due to risk of bushfires, hence why no steam trains were operating in this video.
Each train has a fire patrol truck following close behind to manage any spot fires the trains may create. The trucks do no activate the crossings like the trains do.
Each crossing has a white light at the top of one of the signals which operates when the crossing is activated. This indicates to the train driver the lights and bells are operating.
