Thousands of Afghans expelled from Iran are returning to Afghanistan, where many face freezing winter conditions, hunger and severe hardship.
More than 1.5 million have been deported since June, as Iranian authorities cite security concerns over undocumented migrants.
Many returnees now live in tents with scarce jobs and food, while the World Food Programme estimates 17 million people are affected by aid cuts.
The influx is worsening pressure as Pakistan has also expelled large numbers of Afghan refugees.
Women face additional limits because of restrictions imposed by the Taliban on work and education.
According to UNHCR, about five million Afghans have returned since 2023, straining fragile services.
Aid groups warn shelter, heating, healthcare and funding remain critically insufficient for returnees.
Al Jazeera's Barnaby Lo reports.
Muhammad Sakhi, Executive Director of the Women Activities and Social Services Association, told Al Jazeera that Afghanistan is facing a severe humanitarian strain as mass deportations from Iran drive large numbers of vulnerable returnees across the border. He said women and children are particularly at risk, often arriving with no resources, inadequate clothing, and urgent health needs, especially in winter.
