Blob’s body looks like CGI — but it isn’t.
In this video, we break down how Blob was made using a real 60-pound practical suit, not digital animation. This behind-the-scenes breakdown explores the practical effects used to create real weight, mass, and inertia on camera.
Instead of a single fat suit, the effects team built a modular practical suit made from foam latex and silicone. Each section of the body moved with delayed motion, creating uneven mass and realistic deformation. There was no rigid internal frame.
When Blob was hit, the body didn’t bounce — it compressed, rippled, and lagged, reacting like real weight under force. The suit was heavy and extremely hot, which naturally slowed the actor’s movement and sold the illusion of massive scale.
CGI was used only in post-production to subtly enhance deformation and inertia — not to create the effect. The camera captured a real body first, and visual effects simply reinforced what was already there.
This is why practical effects still outperform CGI when it comes to weight, physics, and realism in movies.
