Tukaram Mundhe, a 2005-batch IAS officer of the Maharashtra cadre, took charge as
Commissioner of the state's Food and Drug Administration in May 2026 and launched
the largest food safety enforcement drive in Maharashtra's history. In under two
months: 1,131 inspections at roughly 20 raids a day, close to Rs 50 crore of food
stock seized, and 1.6 lakh litres of adulterated milk recovered. Large restaurant
chains, ice cream parlours, dairies and members-only clubs all came under the
scanner, with 56 food licences suspended or issued cancellation notices.

Then came the pushback. Gutkha and pan traders protested and demanded his removal.
29 officials from the FDA's own Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar office wrote to the FDA
Minister complaining about extended working hours. Hospitality associations
questioned whether the FDA was following the procedure laid down in the Food
Safety and Standards Act. And in the Park Inn by Radisson matter, the Bombay High
Court asked the sharpest question of all: is suspending a licence over a minor
lapse a proportionate response, and why were only private establishments being
inspected? The FDA's answer came the next day, at the High Court's own canteen.
