In 1997, Heaven’s Gate became one of the most infamous cult tragedies in modern U.S. history. Led by Marshall Applewhite, the group believed Comet Hale–Bopp was a sign — and that a spacecraft hidden behind it would take them to a “Next Level.” Shortly after recording final messages, 39 members died in a coordinated mass suicide in Rancho Santa Fe, California.
