… I decided to start and just recently completed my martial arts book project – Breaking Through: The Secrets of Bassai Dai Kata.

What is unique about this book is that it breaks down the kata beyond prescriptive traditional analysis, and explores the fluid and successive nature of combat. Importantly, it details my school’s unique training methodology and framework of analysis.

There’s sparse and fragmented information on the internet on how to analyse martial arts kata, hyung, or tuls. Many are anecdotes or rules of thumb which are not extrapolated, substantiated nor discussed in a holistic manner.

I have discovered that a framework for analysis leads to consistent progress and increasing returns. Our framework sees tactics from the pattern not as isolated techniques, but a sequence of possible responses to the opponent’s continuing resistance. The opponent will counter you; you will have to counter that counter.
