We're focusing on making sure he understands the mechanics of each command, maintains them in sequence, and develops better impulse control and listening skills. I'm using tone recalls, strategic placement of beds with different distractions, and pressure-release techniques to help him learn from his mistakes and prioritize listening to me over his own desires. We work through a common issue: the dog isn't actually listening to the words being said, but instead relying on expectations and patterns. We practice the place command with recalls, working through distractions and gradually building clarity. We discover that knowing a command is different from truly listening, and we focus on cleaning up recall positions, managing when the dog thinks good means the command is over, and building commitment to stays and downs. Through repetition and positive reinforcement, we watch the dog progress from confusion to understanding the puzzle, eventually offering reliable responses without the need for corrections.
