In today's bustling era of maritime trade, the sizes of container ships continue to grow. Regardless of the advancements in shipbuilding technology, the length of the world's largest class of container ships never crosses the 400-meter mark. But why is this the case?
Primarily, the vast majority of these ultra-large container ships traverse the Suez Canal on their oceanic routes. The Suez Canal, a pivotal conduit for global shipping, has explicit regulations regarding the lengths of vessels. Ships exceeding 400 meters are subject to a series of approval procedures and can only proceed once given the green light. However, this approval process is not only complicated but also quite time-consuming, drastically reducing the efficiency of ship passage. Some might argue that these colossal ships can choose alternative routes, bypassing the Suez Canal. Yet, without using the Suez Canal, the only viable alternative would be to navigate around the Cape of Good Hope at the southern tip of Africa, significantly increasing the voyage distance and consequently multiplying the operational costs manifold. Hence, the world's largest container ships have always remained under the 400-meter mark. It's not an impossibility to construct ships exceeding this length; it's simply unnecessary.
In addition to navigational considerations, safety is another critical factor. Ships braving the high seas regularly encounter substantial winds and waves. The bending moment shear force exerted on a ship by sea waves is directly proportional to the ship's length. This means, the longer the ship, the higher the required longitudinal bending strength. If the ship doesn't possess sufficient strength, it can easily break apart under external forces. Additionally, if the ship's height is too excessive, it risks capsizing under enormous waves. Hence, maintaining a length below 400 meters is a judicious decision, carefully weighed against various considerations.
