Nerf Cat Catnip Disc Blaster

Описание: Somewhere out there in the algorithms, my love of toy shooty things and my cat-dad-itude connected. While shopping around on PetCo, 'cause we need a never-ending supply of litter and box wipes, I encountered the Nerf Cat Catnip Disc Blaster. I had seen the Nerf Dog version before, shoots these bacon or chicken flavored discs. The cat version is basically a reskin, with a "laser" feature added on (and $4 USD added onto the MSRP too). It's really just a red LED in a simple circuit with a switch.

I mean, I had to mod it. Right? Our fur babies are spoiled. I thought I would do a nice cosmetic mod and replace the LED with something a bit stronger. Luckily, we had an old laser cat toy laying around. I figured that with a bit of soldering, I could adapt it. So, I did.

Internally, I gutted the stock components and ripped emitter out of the old toy. The diode was originally running on 3 LR44 cells (~4.5v), so keeping it on the 2 AAA cells (~3v) that the blaster was designed with wasn't an option. I considered rocking a 9v, but the grip wasn't big enough to handle it. I settled on 6 LR44 cells (~9v), all stacked up pole-to-pole. A good bit of electrical tape later and I had myself a nice custom power supply. From there, it was elementary.

I was planning on reworking the internal firing mechanism. It makes a fairly audible click when firing and that's enough to scare Gideon. He's a bit skittish around Daddy's foam-flinging creations. I had hoped to convert it from a metal torsion spring over to elastic to make it quieter, but I wasn't having any luck with it. I might still try it later on.

All-in-all, the babies love chasing the red dot and this catdad got to make a cool video out of it.
