Foundation: Building Drive & Trust
Short retrieves with enthusiasm
Start with very short retrieves.
Keep them fun, with high-value rewards (dummy, ball, treat).
Aim for a straight out and straight back delivery.
Confidence in straight lines
Always line your dog up properly before sending.
If the line isn’t straight, reset — don’t let them learn to arc or drift.
Extending Distance
Memory retrieves
Walk out with the dog, place the dummy, then return to heel.
Send the dog back with “Back.”
Start at short, then build distance, slowly working up.
Trust building
Work in path ways with walls either side open fields , so the dog sees the line.
Later, progress to cover or undulating ground where it must trust your command.
Transition to Long Retrieves
Increase one step at a time
Don’t jump too far too fast — keep success high.
Blind retrieves
Place a dummy while the dog isn’t watching.
Line up and send “Back.”
Start short, then stretch distance gradually.
