Real world whirlpools aren't nearly as dramatic or dangerous as literary ones. Sure, you generally won't want to intentionally run your boat directly bow first into one, but unless you have a particularly small or fragile boat, even if you did you'd survive it. So good for sailors, I guess. Not good for story tellers...
