"I described the far-reaching political and economic consequences that this situation entails, in addition to the brutal reality of war, not only for Europe but also worldwide. We discussed this as well, and I made clear I am convinced that the Chinese side could have a very special role in ending this war and influencing Russia."

"A central issue for me is access to critical raw materials. I made clear today that we need reliability and stability here for German and European companies, that the unjustified application of export controls constitutes a serious threat to the world economy. In my talks today, I received the assurance from the Chinese side that German and European concerns about the export restrictions for rare earths and critical raw materials are being taken seriously and that we want to find joint solutions regarding reliable access and reliable supply chains."

"We also discussed overcapacities in key sectors such as steel, solar and electromobility – from the German side, we see a danger to fair competition here and also see that industrial jobs and jobs outside China are also endangered in Germany. I emphasized that it should be a joint task to tackle the reduction of these overcapacities and thus also ensure stable competitive conditions."

STORYLINE:
German Vice Chancellor Lars Klingbeil called on China in Beijing on Monday to play a stronger role in ending Russia’s war against Ukraine, saying the conflict continues to destabilize the global economy.
Klingbeil also pressed for fair competition and secure access to critical raw materials, warning that China’s export controls on rare earths pose a “serious threat” to global supply chains.
He said Chinese officials assured him that European concerns were being taken seriously.
He further urged Beijing to curb industrial overcapacity in steel, solar and electric vehicles, arguing it endangers jobs outside China.
