Did you know that recent research confirmed 14 possible causes (risk factors) for dementia — and together they may account for almost half (45%) of dementia cases worldwide?
In this video, Dr Knight breaks down the 2024 Lancet Commission findings, explaining:
✅ What a dementia “risk factor” actually is
✅ Which risks are modifiable (things you can change) vs non-modifiable
✅ The 14 confirmed risk factors linked to dementia
✅ Practical steps you can take to reduce your dementia risk

04:08 Summary
-----------------------
The biggest contributors to dementia risk include:
1. Hearing impairment
2. High cholesterol
3. Less education in early life
4. Social isolation in later life
Other dementia risk factors include:
5. Air pollution
6. Traumatic brain injury
7. Depression
8. High blood pressure
9. Diabetes
10. Obesity
11. Physical inactivity
12. Smoking
13. Excessive alcohol consumption
14. Uncorrected vision loss
⚠️ Having one (or even several) of these risk factors does not mean you will definitely develop dementia - and not having them doesn’t guarantee you won’t. But it does mean there are things we can do to reduce risk and protect brain health.
How to reduce your dementia risk
Small changes can make a big difference:
Eat a healthier diet
Stay socially connected (avoid isolation)
Manage health conditions (especially blood pressure + cholesterol)
Get regular hearing and vision checks
Exercise regularly
Reduce alcohol and stop smoking
Keep your brain active (reading, learning, puzzles, crosswords)
Avoid head injuries
It’s never too late to start - but the earlier the better. Even if dementia still develops, addressing these risks may reduce how long someone spends living with dementia, helping people stay healthier for longer.
