This video talks about four main challenges that all cutting tool manufacturers should be aware of.-
The first challenge- Regulation.
It's obvious because human life is at stake. Companies who want to get into the sector must be ready to undergo an extremely in-depth, comprehensive, and very detailed certification process.
Example- The rotary parts in the aircraft come under much more scrutiny than the static parts. More often than not, these rotating parts have tighter tolerance as well. A cutting tool selected for making these rotating parts will have to experience a lot of inspection before it is accepted. Moreover, since the numbers are so low, an in-depth review is possible.
The second biggest challenge- the variety of materials
Some of the common materials are nickel-based, composites, and composites that are stacked. There may be combinations of these materials as well. Composites are much more difficult to machine than any other metallic components. Some aerospace components are made up of thermoplastics within the composites, but they have lower melting points.
The third main challenge is the complexity of the part.
Manufacturers will require complex cutting tools to make complex components. Now while designing these parts, various design parameters take precedence over the machinability of the component. So the restrictions that component manufacturers may face during machining take lower priority while designing these components.
Now to overcome this challenge, cutting tool manufacturers need to have a very in-depth conversation. And they have to really understand the restrictions that the component manufacturers may face and design, and then provide a solution and then design the cutting tools accordingly.
The fourth main challenge- is the cost per piece.
As the components made for this industry, they're made out of some exotic materials that undergo a huge amount of approval, certification, and scrutiny. Hence the cost of one component is quite high.
So component manufacturers absolutely would not want to scrap their components. Cutting tools play a very significant role in scrappage. If the surface finish, tolerance, and dimensional accuracy are maintained by the cutting tool, the component won't be scrapped.
On the other hand, if the wrong tool is used or a low-quality tool is used, there is a high chance of the eventual part being scrapped while making these components.
