The opening scenes are captioned "Hollandia, New Guinea" and dated 21 April 1944. Landings of U.S. Army troops on Hollandia took place the following day.
Scenes of deck activity including arming SBD Dauntless dive bombers is in preparation for an attack on Wake Island probably in October 1943. Watch for distant muzzle flashes from ships at sea, bombarding Wake. Sick bay scenes, and planning by the tail of an F6F Hellcat, are captured on film.
As the war progressed, trusty old SBD Dauntless dive bombers would be largely replaced by SB2C Helldivers and even F4U Corsairs in the dive bombing role. But the Dauntless earned a reputation for reliability and combat capability that has made the SBD an icon of the Pacific air war.
