I really enjoy trying new vegan food, and I am impressed with all the vegan options at cafes these days!

I've had my fair share of experiences and adventures in the outdoors and have some tips for...

1) Your safety: Take gear suitable for the terrain, weather and length of your hike (including extra food, a tent, raincoat and change of clothes and warm bedding); read your track notes and map; tell someone where you are going and your expected return date; hire or buy a locator beacon.

2) Kaitiakitanga / caring for our environment:

Only burn paper, cardboard and wood/ grass in it's natural state (and without chopping down trees or destroying vegetation!) as plastic gives off noxious vapours (ideally in a fireplace); take only photos and leave only footprints! Pick up any rubbish you see on the track, or drop yourself; clean and dry your shoes after you return home. Use the 'Check, Clean, Dry method' to ensure you remove any Didymo that may have caught on your footwear or walking poles:

To follow the 'Check, Clean, Dry method' to combat Didymo, all you need is some dishwashing liquid! The Ministry for Primary Industries recommends you 'use a mix of 10% dishwashing detergent with water (...)
