While Pastor Jonah is away for a couple of weeks, Elder Daryl Hanson fills the pulpit. He begins a series exploring the person of the Messiah. The Hebrew term is Mashiach, and means "The Anointed One." Much like a king or a priest, who are appointed for a special purpose, God officially announced in the Garden of Eden that there would be One who would eventually come, who would be born of a woman by means of a virgin birth, and who would take care of the sin-debt all humans have as a result of the sin of Adam long ago. This One would be sinless, eternal, and God in the flesh. He would suffer and die upon the cross, bearing the sins of mankind, and all those who would repent of their sins, who would believe whole heartedly in Him, and place their trust in His finished work of redemption alone at Golgotha would become Children of God. Trusting in oneself or in any other means in which to be saved will not be sufficient, no matter how many "good deeds" a person might accomplish in their life. Trusting in Jesus Christ alone is the Only Way.

A. Definition of the word Messiah
1. The Hebrew word is Maschiach מָשִיחַ
2. It means Anointed One
3. It is used of those specifically appointed to serve in an official capacity
B. The nature of the Messiah
1. Is He Man or God or both?
2. Is it a matter of Apotheosis or is He actually God in the flesh?
3. Would He be superhuman?
II. Proto-Euangelion – Gen 3:15
A. The first proclamation of the Gospel
B. One to be sent by God to satisfy our sin-debt
1. Anyone who sins must die – Ezek 18:4, 20; Rom 6:23a
2. Sin always results in death – Eph 2:1-3
a. Spiritual death comes first
b. Physical death follows afterwards
C. The payment for our sins must be made by an innocent victim – II Cor 5:21
1. Uncontaminated by sin – Heb 4:15; I Pet 1:19
2. The blood of animals could never be sufficient – Heb 10:1, 4
D. The victim would become our atoning sacrifice
1. His sacrificial act would cover our debt in full – (No other payment would be necessary)
2. He had to be physically related to us to be efficacious – (Effective desired outcome)
3. He must be our Kinsman Redeemer
E. This declaration inaugurated the Seed War
1. The Messiah, the Seed of the woman, would one day have to suffer and die
2. The Antichrist would be crushed in the struggle
(Hebrew שוּף Shoof - bruise, break, crush)
3. Satan would ultimately be defeated
III. Profile of the Messiah
A. Born of a woman – Gen 3:15; Gal 4:4
B. Seed of Abraham / Jacob – Gen 12:3; 18:18; Num 24:17, 19
C. A Prophet like Moses – Deut 18:15, 19
D. He would be known as the “Branch” – Is 11:1-2; Jer 23:5; 33:15
1. The Hebrew word is netser נֵצֶר
2. The Messiah lived most of His life in the town of Nazareth – נְצֶרֶת (Ne-tser-ret)
E. Son of David – Ps 132:11; Is 11:10; Matt 1:1
F. Born of a virgin – Is 7:14; Luke 1:26-27
G. Born in Bethlehem – Mic 5:2; Matt 2:1
1. In Hebrew Bethlehem means “House of Bread” – בֵית־לֶחֶם (Beit-Lechem)
