In this video Heimler takes you through Unit 4 Topic 3 of the AP U.S. History curriculum which is set in period 4 (1800-1848).
Regional interests dominated American politics from 1800 to 1848. The main issue at stake, as always, was the expansion of slavery. This argument came to a head in 1819 when Missouri applied to the Union for statehood as a slave state.
This would upset the delicate balance in the Senate between slaves states and free states. Henry Clay came to the rescue with the Missouri Compromise (also known as the Compromise of 1820). That settled tensions for a while, but... you know...
