To understand the fight against systemic racism and inequality... you have to understand the numbers.
Let's start with income.
It's a major predictor... for the challenges and obstacles to come...
A black family in Minnesota... earns about 38-thousand dollars a year.
That's less than half of the average income of a white family... making it the second biggest income gap in the nation.
That impacts housing...
In Minneapolis has the largest gap between black and white home ownership rates in the United States.
While about three-quarters of white families own homes... only about one-quarter of black families do.
Black renters spend a significantly larger portion of their income on rent... compared to any other group.
As for jobs...
The unemployment rate for black Minnesotans... is double the rate for white Minnesotans.
With fewer employment opportunities... there are fewer chances to get health insurance... which leads to more unchecked health issues.
Diabetes... heart disease... and mortality rates... are higher among people of color and of lower socioeconomic status.
So what about education as a way towards better job opportunities?
We have one of the nation's worst education achievement gaps...on everything from graduation rates... test scores... reading... and math.
Poverty.
Unstable housing.
Unemployment.
Poor health.
Lack of education.
That leads to an incarceration rate of black Minnesotans... that is 11-times that of white Minnesotans.
Black people make up less than 6-percent of the state's population... but made up 35-percent of the prison population.
The numbers... knowing and understanding them... leading conversations to change to envision better.
