Black history facts, hidden Black history, and forgotten Black history in All across America, thriving Black towns were deliberately flooded — erasing Black wealth, culture, and history. Communities like Oscarville, Georgia (now under Lake Lanier), Kowaliga, Alabama, Vanport, Oregon, and Seneca Village in New York were once thriving Black neighborhoods with schools, businesses, and families.
When these towns grew too strong, they weren’t celebrated — they were erased. In the name of “progress,” homes were bulldozed, Black families were forced out, and the land was drowned under water or redeveloped for others.
Oscarville, Georgia — a thriving Black community wiped out in the early 1900s, now buried beneath Lake Lanier, where thousands swim without knowing the history.
Kowaliga, Alabama — once home to Black-owned businesses and schools, drowned under Lake Martin.
Vanport, Oregon — a diverse Black city washed away by floodwaters in 1948, leaving tens of thousands displaced.
Seneca Village, New York — a Black landowning community destroyed to make way for Central Park.
This isn’t random tragedy — it’s a pattern. Black success was too often met with erasure. Progress drowned Black legacies, leaving families without homes and generations without wealth.
🔥 Watch now to uncover the hidden Black history under America’s lakes and cities.
