➡️Instructions
Make the icing according to the instructions on the package. The icing should hold a stiff peak. Remove ½ cup of icing, cover it tightly, and set it aside. Thin the rest of the icing to flood consistency by adding 2 tablespoons of water. To check the consistency, take a spoonful of icing out of the bowl and drop it back in. It should take 15 to 20 seconds for the icing to be completely smooth. If the icing is too thick, add more water, ½ teaspoon at a time, until you reach flood consistency. Remove 2 tablespoons of icing and color it gray by adding a tiny drop of Coal Black food coloring. Fill a decorating bag with the gray icing and tie the top of the bag to keep the icing from spilling out. Fill another decorating bag with 2 tablespoons of white flood consistency icing and tie the top of the bag. Spilt the remaining flood consistency icing in half. Color one half of the icing blue with a small drop of blue food coloring. Color the other half of the icing purple by adding a small drop of blue and red food coloring (adjust the shade of purple by adding more blue or more red as desired). Cover the icing tightly and set it aside.
Decorating steps:
Step 1: Follow the guides on the gingerbread house pieces to ice the windows with the gray flood consistency icing. Use the scribe tool to help shape the icing to fit into the guides. Immediately pipe reflections in the windows by adding stripes of white flood consistency icing in each window pane. Use the white flood consistency icing to fill in the door, avoiding the door handle. Use the scribe tool to help shape the icing to fit into the guides. Allow the icing to dry for at least 1 hour.
Step 2: Fill one decorating bag with the blue flood consistency icing and one decorating bag with the purple flood consistency icing. Tie the tops of the bags to keep the icing from spilling out. Ice the area around the left window of the front of the gingerbread house with the blue flood consistency icing. Immediately pipe a filigree design with the purple flood consistency icing while the blue icing is still wet. Repeat this process in between the windows, under the right window, and above the windows. Use the same process to ice the back and sides of the gingerbread house, alternating between using blue and purple for the base layer of icing (the front of the house will be blue with purple filigree and the back of the house will be purple with blue filigree).
Step 3: Ice the roof pieces by filling in the scallops with the blue and purple flood consistency icing. Sprinkle the roof pieces with the sparkling sugar while the icing is still wet. Don’t remove the excess sparkling sugar until the icing is completely dry. Allow the icing to dry at least 8 hours.
Step 4: Place the stiff consistency icing into a decorating bag and tie the top of the bag. Pour the sparkling sugar onto a plate or flat surface. Outline the windows and doors with the stiff consistency icing. Immediately dip the iced windows and doors into the sparkling sugar. Add a door knob to the front and back doors by attaching a silver sixlet with the stiff consistency icing.
Step 5: If desired, wrap the cardboard round with decorative paper before assembling the house. Assemble the house with the stiff consistency icing following the assembly instructions provided. Combine the remaining white stiff consistency icing and white flood consistency icing to create soft peak icing. Fill a decorating bag with the icing and tie the top of the bag. Pipe a bead border along the seams of the walls. Use a wavy motion to pipe icing along the roof seam and place silver and gold sixlets across the top. Pipe snow on the window sills and icicles along the edge of the roof. If desired, pipe icing on the cardboard base and sprinkle it with the white nonpareils and the remaining sparkling sugar.
