There were three powerful demons named Vidyunmali, Tarakaksha, and Viryavana, collectively known as the Tripurasuras, who were wreaking havoc in the universe. These demons had acquired immense power and invincibility through their severe penance and received three flying cities made of gold, silver, and iron as boons from Lord Brahma. These cities were known as Tripura.
The Tripurasuras, filled with arrogance, began tormenting the gods and causing destruction. The gods sought help from Lord Shiva, who was known for his immense power and ability to destroy evil forces. Lord Shiva agreed to confront the demons and put an end to their tyranny.

The demons, residing in their flying cities, created an impenetrable defense system, making it challenging for the gods to defeat them. Lord Shiva, in his divine form, mounted his celestial vehicle, the bull Nandi, and set out to confront the Tripurasuras.

With his supreme powers, Lord Shiva destroyed the flying cities and defeated the demons. He shot a single arrow that pierced through all three cities, causing them to collapse and bringing an end to the reign of the Tripurasuras. This event is celebrated as Tripura Samhara or the victory of Lord Shiva over the Tripurasuras.
