The New York State Senate voted in favor of an African trophy import and possession ban (Senate Bill 5014), despite the well-known conservation success stories and positive economic impacts that sustainable hunting provides in southern Africa. The bill aims to ban the importation and possession in New York of lion, leopard, white rhino, black rhino, elephant, and giraffe hunting trophies.
Over 80% of the world’s elephants and 90% of the world’s rhino inhabit the seven countries where they are hunted. These countries protect almost all the world’s lions, leopard, and giraffe as well and manage wildlife with a focus on expanding habitat and rural development. Despite the continued success of these conservation models, the New York State Senate is passing its unfounded judgment on these African nations.
