Do you run physically based simulations, such as HEC-RAS hydraulic models? Do you find long simulation runtimes to be the bottleneck for project timelines?
Today I’m excited to share with you some of the technologies we work with here at CH Fenstermaker, in pursuit of ever-optimizing hydraulic analysis. This video will provide a quick demo of running 4 HEC-RAS simulations in parallel, offloaded onto Linux virtual machines in the AWS cloud. A basic recipe is laid out for architecting cloud infrastructure for parallelizing your own physically based simulations, with best practices and tips on the ins and outs from technical, scheduling, and cost perspectives.
For those coming from hydraulic and hydrologic engineering, earth sciences, and similar disciplines who are interested in adopting cloud computing technology, I’m hoping this will serve as a grounding point, companion to the torrent of technical documentation available for the endless variety of services on AWS and other cloud providers.
