Come and ride along with me as I pedal through the charming seaside town of Dawlish, all the way towards Dawlish Warren!
Dawlish is a charming seaside town in South Devon, England, best known for its picturesque railway line that runs right along the sea wall, its black swans, and its gentle, old-fashioned resort atmosphere.
Key Facts & Features
• Location: On the south coast of Devon, between Teignmouth and Exeter, about 12 miles south of Exeter.
• Population: Around 15,000–16,000.
• Famous for: The Brunel-designed railway running along the seafront (part of the Great Western main line from London Paddington to Cornwall). The dramatic sea-wall section between Dawlish and Teignmouth is one of the most scenic (and occasionally dramatic!) rail journeys in the UK. It was famously destroyed by storms in 2014 and rebuilt.
• Dawlish Water: A small stream (known locally as “The Brook”) runs through the middle of the town, surrounded by lawns called The Lawn. This is home to the famous colony of black swans, introduced from Western Australia in the 1930s by a local hotelier. You’ll also see ducks, geese, and sometimes even visiting wildfowl.
• Beaches:
• Dawlish Town Beach – shingle with red sandstone cliffs.
• Dawlish Warren – a couple of miles north, a long sandy spit, Blue Flag beach, and important nature reserve (part of the Exe Estuary).
Things to See & Do
• The Lawn & black swans – lovely central park area with cafés and ice-cream vans.
• South West Coast Path walks – stunning clifftop walks in both directions (to Dawlish Warren or towards Teignmouth and beyond).
• Dawlish Museum – small but packed with local history.
• Footplate Café & viewing area – watch trains thunder past just feet away.
• Shaftesbury Theatre – tiny community theatre with a surprisingly good programme.
• Lea Mount & Coryton Cove – quieter little coves with rock pools, reached via tunnels under the railway.
Atmosphere & Vibe
Traditional English seaside resort – think Regency and Victorian architecture, pastel-coloured houses, putting greens, and a relaxed pace. It’s popular with families and retirees rather than party crowds. Very dog-friendly.
Transport
• Railway station right in the town centre (on the main Exeter–Plymouth–Cornwall line). Direct trains from London Paddington, Bristol, Exeter, Plymouth, etc.
• Regular local buses to Exeter, Torquay, Teignmouth.
• Nearest airport: Exeter (about 15 miles).
Nearby Attractions
• Dawlish Warren Nature Reserve & golf course
• Teignmouth (next town along the coast)
• Exeter (cathedral city, shopping, university)
• Powderham Castle
• The start of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site is only about 20 miles east.
In short: Dawlish is a quintessentially English, slightly quirky, beautifully situated small resort town – perfect for a peaceful break, train enthusiasts, birdwatchers, or anyone who loves watching waves crash against the railway while eating fish and chips!
My observations are the subject of this ride. So come along and enjoy another great cycling adventure.
