The Rideau Canal Skateway is a renowned winter attraction in Ottawa, Ontario, transforming a section of the historic Rideau Canal into the world’s largest naturally frozen skating rink. It’s a centerpiece of winter activities in Canada’s capital, drawing visitors from near and far. Here's what you should know:
Key Features
Length: The Skateway spans 7.8 kilometers (4.8 miles), running from Downtown Ottawa (near the National Arts Centre) to Dows Lake.
Size: The total ice surface is equivalent to about 90 Olympic-sized hockey rinks.
Free Access: Skating on the Rideau Canal Skateway is completely free, making it an accessible and popular activity for locals and tourists alike.
Activities
Skating: The canal’s flat, frozen surface provides a scenic and smooth path for skaters of all skill levels. Skaters can enjoy stunning views of Ottawa’s downtown and surrounding areas.
Rest Stops: Along the route, there are heated changing huts, washrooms, and benches for taking breaks.
Food and Beverages: Vendors sell warm treats like Beavertails (a Canadian fried pastry) and hot chocolate, which have become synonymous with the Skateway experience.
Photography: The Skateway offers picturesque views of landmarks like Parliament Hill, creating plenty of photo opportunities.
Operating Season
The Skateway typically opens in January and runs through late February or early March, depending on weather conditions.
Ice Quality: The National Capital Commission (NCC) monitors ice thickness and quality, ensuring the safety of skaters. Ice must be at least 30 centimeters thick to support skaters.
Events and Festivals
The Skateway is a central attraction during Ottawa’s Winterlude Festival, held annually in February. The festival features ice sculptures, live entertainment, and family-friendly activities.
Special night skating events and themed activities are sometimes hosted along the canal.
Accessibility
Skaters and non-skaters alike can enjoy the Skateway. Those who don’t skate can rent sleighs to be pushed along the ice or simply walk beside it.
Skate rentals, sharpening services, and refreshments are available at various stations along the route.
Unique Winter Experience
The Rideau Canal Skateway is more than a skating trail; it’s a quintessential Canadian winter experience that combines history, recreation, and community spirit. Whether you’re a seasoned skater or a first-timer, it’s a magical way to enjoy Ottawa’s winter wonderland.
Have you ever skated on the Rideau Canal, or are you planning to try it?
Monday morning skate on the Rideau Canal Skateway. Started at Lisgar, went to Bank (current end of the line) and back to Beaver Tails. Scattered flurries and temperature was around 0 degrees. Ice a bit softer than yesterday and definitely less busy than this past opening weekend. Beautiful day to go for a skate.
I think this may be the set up I'll continue to use. I'll try again tomorrow. If you see me, wave and say "hello"!
