Construction of the main structure of the Baihetan Hydropower Station in southwest China's Sichuan was completed on Monday. The water project has an installed capacity of 16 million kilowatts, capable of producing over 62 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity per year. That's more than 15 times the energy produced by the Hoover Dam in the United States. It can help reduce China's carbon dioxide emissions by more than 51 million tonnes a year.
In terms of installed capacity, Baihetan Hydropower Station is second only to the Three Gorges Dam in the central province of Hubei. The first batch of its generating units will go into operation in July and one year after that, the world's second largest hydropower station will become fully operational.
