This dal is literally a warm hug on a platter - it spells out care and comfort to me.

This is the sort of meal I cook when I am seeking comfort, like yesterday, when we had just returned home from a holiday and I was struggling to get back to my routine.
This isn't restaurant-style dal, but rather a home-style one that is very simple, delicious and nourishing. Let me show you how I make it.

Ingredients (serves 4-5):
1. 1 cup of toor dal
2. 3/4 tablespoon oil (I prefer groundnut oil)
3. 1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds
4. 1/2 teaspoon cumin (jeera) seeds
5. 2 pinches of asafoetida
6. A 1-inch piece of ginger, peeled and finely chopped
7. Salt to taste
8. 1/2 teaspoon of turmeric powder
9. 2 green chillies or as needed, chopped
10. Red chilli powder to taste
11. 3/4 tablespoon jaggery or to taste
14. Juice of 1 lemon or to taste
15. A handful of fresh coriander, finely chopped

Enjoy this simple dal hot with rice and some papad, pickle or sabzi by the side. I prefer having it with an easy instant onion pickle - tastes fab!
