Today, we will be discussing the topic of ambivalence. Ambivalence is often a time of confusion and frustration for individuals in a recovery process. This is the idea of wanting to change and potentially not knowing how to change. This is the crossroads or an intersection that can be informative to a treatment process and lend to effective treatment outcomes when managed well throughout the counseling process. What is ambivalence? it is simply the state of having mixed or contradictory feelings about something. It's a difficult feeling and something we’ve all experienced when we feel torn between choices.
Focus Questions to Consider:
As an addiction counselor, how will you guard against misinterpreting ambivalence?
What techniques might you implement to guide an individual with a substance use disorder through change and sustain talk?
What are the similarities of solution-focused therapy and motivational interviewing that would support the client in self-exploration to identify values, beliefs, and attitudes?
Texts explored in this lecture include: Rollnick, S. (2013). Motivational Interviewing: Helping people change (3rd ed.). Guilford Press. ISBN: 978-1609182274
This video focuses on chapters 11, 12, 13, and 14 of Miller and Rollnick (2013).
