STORYLINE
Pro-Palestinian demonstrators took to the streets in India and Pakistan on Monday in response to the conflict in Gaza between Israel and Hamas, and to the mounting death toll in Israel's 6-day-old offensive meant to quell Hamas rocket fire on Israel.
In New Delhi hundreds of protestors marched on the Israeli embassy, chanting anti-Israel and anti-US slogans and burning effigies of US President Barack Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
The were pushed away by the police as they tried to break the security barrier near the embassy complex.
The protest was organised by various student groups active in the country's capital.
India has traditionally supported the Palestinian people's right to a state, and while it has also been pursuing a policy of improving ties with Israel, it maintains that it will not come at the cost of ignoring Palestinians' aspirations.
Meanwhile in India's Muslim-majority neighbour Pakistan, supporters of the Jamaat-ud-Dawa Islamic militant organisation set Israeli and US flags on fire and chanted slogans calling for a Jihad to liberate Palestine from Israel.
Speakers at the rally in Karachi condemned the attacks on Gaza and accused US President Obama of supporting Israel in its actions.
"Obama is behind the aggression. America wants to divert the attention of the world from the Afghan war by spilling the blood of Palestinian people. They think that they will change the defeat into victory. But this dream will not be fulfilled," said Naveed Qamar, a local Jamaatud Dawah leader.
