Honda Grand Civic Head Gasket Replacement
The Importance of Honda Gaskets
Gaskets are an important part of a vehicle's engine and subsystems. The most notable ones are located between upper and lower sections of fluid reservoirs and under the engine block’s top cover, where the head cover bolts on. Others are placed on reservoir drain bolts, and anywhere metal parts connect to form a soft seal that prevents the metal on metal connection while filling in any inconsistencies where fluid could potentially leak. Some gaskets are rubber, others are cork, and are installed with gasket sealer, a light silicone glue that holds them in place while reinstalling the part and forming the final seal.
Reasons for Gasket Replacement
Gaskets always need to be replaced when the surrounding parts are removed. Theoretically, the old gasket can be reused, but there's no way to know if it may have been compromised until the repair is finished. If the gasket isn't working, the part has to be taken back out so a new gasket can be installed, which is essentially going to cost as much as the original repair trying to save a few dollars the new gasket would have cost to do the job right the first time. In other situations, the gasket is made of rubber might simply wear out over time. It's not difficult to diagnose; if there is a slow fluid leak, it's likely to be a bad gasket, as a burst hose or broken part would cause all the fluid to pour out rather than losing a few drops every day.
What Happens when Gaskets Aren't Replaced?
Although losing a few drops of oil or fluid every day might not seem important, it is. First, there's an environmental concern about toxic fluids leaking on the ground. Second, even if the driver tops off the fluid regularly, it will be continuously low and unable to work as intended. That’s assuming the refill process is routinely maintained rather than being postponed. It might not seem like a big problem to top off fluids, but the cost adds up over time, and the leak is only going to get worse until it has to be completed, so it's not saving any money to put off gasket replacement.
