Welcome back to the Storyteller's Forge. Today, I am acting as your Peer Support Core Competencies Trainer. We are diving into Module 7: Ethics and Boundaries, which is one of the most critical areas for the Peer Support Canada certification. In a professional interview, you will almost certainly face scenario-based questions about boundary crossings. Your ability to respond with compassion while maintaining firm professional lines is exactly what assessors are looking for.

Here is your comprehensive study guide for Module 7.

1. THE CORE DEFINITION: WHAT ARE BOUNDARIES?

Boundaries are the framework that makes safety possible. They are the unseen lines that define what is acceptable in a relationship.

The Metaphor: Think of a fence. It tells people where their property ends and yours begins. It allows you to invite people in safely rather than leaving the door wide open for potential harm.

The Intersection: Safety and comfort sit at the intersection of Personal Boundaries, Ethics (Code of Conduct), Legislation (Privacy laws), and Organization (Policies).

2. THE FRIENDLY, NOT FRIENDS DISTINCTION

This is the Golden Rule of peer support. We build deep rapport and connection, but we remain friendly, not friends. Friendship implies a limitless, two-way emotional reliance and 24/7 availability. Peer support is professional, time-limited, and focused entirely on the peer’s wellness journey.

3. THE CODE OF CONDUCT: THE NON-NEGOTIABLES

Memorize these Hard Lines for your evaluation:

No Romantic or Sexual Relationships.
No Exploitation: Do not take advantage of the relationship for personal or financial gain.
Do No Harm: Never knowingly expose a peer to harm.
Confidentiality: Respect privacy within the limits of the law, such as the Duty to Protect.

4. NAVIGATING POWER DYNAMICS

Even in a peer role, a power imbalance exists because you are in a helper role with organizational authority. You mitigate this by being transparent about your role and inviting the peer to set their own boundaries with you.

5. PRACTICAL SKILL APPLICATION: SCENARIOS AND SCRIPTS

Scenario A: The Weekend Crisis
The Situation: A peer asks for your personal cell number because they are worried about the weekend.
The Script: I hear that you are going through a tough time. I do not give out my personal number and I am not available on weekends, but let us look up the crisis line together and make a plan for Monday morning.

Scenario B: The Social Media Request
The Situation: A peer sends you a friend request on Facebook or Instagram.
The Script: (Do not accept the request). In the next session, say: I saw your request, but I have a policy of not adding peers on social media. This protects your privacy and keeps our focus on your wellness.

Scenario C: Physical Contact
The Situation: A peer reaches out for a hug after a heavy session.
The Script: I am not really a hugger, but I am so glad you shared that with me today. How about a high-five instead?

6. TECHNIQUES FOR COMMUNICATING BOUNDARIES

Be Proactive: Discuss boundaries at the very beginning of the relationship.
Use I Statements: Frame it around your needs, such as I feel uncomfortable when... because... I would like...
Do Not Apologize: You have a right to your safety. Offer an alternative instead of an apology.

7. MANAGING DUAL RELATIONSHIPS

This happens when you have two roles, like being a Peer Supporter and a neighbour.
The Strategy: Discuss it immediately. Say: If we see each other at the grocery store, I will not say hello first to protect your confidentiality. If you want to say hi to me, that is up to you.

8. WHAT TO DO IF A BOUNDARY IS CROSSED

If a boundary is tested, remain calm and do not react with anger. Restate the boundary clearly and consistently. If the issue causes you distress, always debrief with your supervisor immediately.

TRAINER'S FINAL TIP

Setting healthy boundaries is an act of Modelling Wellness. You are showing the peer what a safe relationship looks like, which is a vital part of their recovery journey.
