Have you ever wondered what a bucket pile is or are you asking what the heck is a bucket pile?
A bucket pile is a form of helical pile which has a lead section resembling a traditional helical pile with narrow shaft while also having a trailing section with much larger shaft. The larger upper portion of the pile displaces a tremendous amount of soil to greatly consolidate it around the shaft and achieve high lateral resistance. The upper portion of the bucket pile acts, as the name implies, as a bucket for poles. Once installed, you simply place the pole in the bucket and hold level while filling the voids with gravel. There are drainage holes at the bottom of the bucket to allow water to drain.
If your business is pole structures or transmission distribution, bucket piles are a very effective way to ensure stable long-lasting poles in less than desirable soils. Typically bucket piles are utilized in saturated soils such as marshes, silts, etc. the sorts of sites where poles tend to lean and ultimately fail much earlier than desired.
What is the downside of a bucket pile? Simply the equipment for installing bucket piles is rather rare. Helical Pile contractors, like VersaPile Inc., have high torque anchor drives to install piles and the drives required to install bucket piles tend are immense. A minimum anchor drive output should be 100,000 ft-lbs of torque but ideally 200,000 ft-lbs is available (VersaPile has in excess of 200,000 lbs-ft).
