Reneilwe Morema reports on the escalating war in Sudan, where the country is facing one of its most devastating attacks yet after a deadly drone strike blamed on the Rapid Support Forces militia.
At least 17 people were killed after an explosive-laden drone struck a secondary school and health centre in the village of Shukeiri in Sudan’s White Nile province. Most of the victims were schoolgirls, along with teachers and medical staff, and at least ten others were injured in the attack.
The strike is the latest escalation in Sudan’s brutal civil war, which erupted in 2023 between the Sudanese army and the RSF. The conflict has already killed tens of thousands of people and displaced millions, making it one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.
The RSF has long been accused by Sudan’s government of receiving support and weapons from the United Arab Emirates, a claim the UAE has repeatedly denied.
As the war intensifies, analysts warn that shifting regional conflicts and economic pressures across the Middle East could also reshape the flow of funding and weapons in Sudan’s war — potentially changing the balance of power on the battlefield.
With civilians increasingly caught in the crossfire, the tragedy unfolding in Sudan raises urgent questions about accountability, foreign involvement, and whether the international community will act before the conflict spirals even further out of control.
