Isaiah's call from God involves a revelation of God's Presence as He sits enthroned above the Jerusalem Temple between the seraphim, high and lifted up. This vision has resonances with other such ordinations of God's prophets, including Moses' call to talk to Pharaoh and John's call to deliver the revelation of Jesus to the seven churches.
After his call, Isaiah is sent to Ahaz with a word about the impending invasion of the northern tribes of Israel by Assyria, a word that includes the promise of Immanuel, a son who will be living in a new political reality by the time he understands the word "No." Matthew picks up on the prophecy of Immanuel and applies the words to Jesus in his gospel, making that portion of Isaiah's word to Ahaz one of the most famous Christmas pageant lines of all time.
