On March 12, 1947, President Harry Truman walked into the U.S. Capitol and changed American foreign policy for the next 40+ years. In a single speech, he laid out what became known as the Truman Doctrine—and many historians see it as the official start of the Cold War.
In this Today in History episode, we look at why two nations on the edge of Europe, Greece and Turkey, pushed the United States into a global struggle with the Soviet Union.
You’ll learn:
• Why Britain suddenly told the U.S. it could no longer support Greece and Turkey
• How communist insurgents in Greece and Soviet pressure on Turkey’s Dardanelles raised alarm in Washington
• What Truman meant by calling this aid “an investment in world freedom and world peace”
• How the Truman Doctrine led directly to the Marshall Plan and the creation of NATO
• Why this speech convinced Americans they were in a life-or-death struggle with the USSR
